FAQ
What is an IRS tax ID number (EIN)?
You can think of it like a Social Security number for your business. An IRS tax ID number is officially termed an Employer Identification Number, EIN for short. Many people also call it a "Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN)," a "Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)," "Federal Taxpayer Identification Number," “federal taxpayer number,” “IRS company tax ID” and “business tax ID.” See "The Basics of EINs."
When and why do I need a tax ID number (EIN)?
Organizations and businesses need a tax ID number (EIN) when they first are formed. Most business permits, business bank accounts, sales tax accounts, state tax accounts, loans, and business credit applications require one. A sole proprietor (a business owner who is not a registered company) or a simple partnership also usually needs one, and Schedule C of Form 1040 often requires it. To pay payroll tax on employees requires a tax ID number (EIN). See The Basics of EINs.
Why should I use the Tax ID Filing Group’s services?
People like to use the Tax ID Filing Group of Lawyer’s Aid Service when they don’t have the time or patience to learn the ins and outs of a somewhat complex IRS procedure they likely won’t ever need again. Our mission is to to use our experience to make the tax ID number (EIN) process as easy, fast, and reliable as possible and give you top-notch service.
Are there hidden fees?
No. We hate hidden fees.
Do you obtain ITINs for foreign citizens or state tax ID numbers?
Sorry, we do not.
What payment methods are available?
You can pay with a Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or PayPal.
What is the Tax ID Filing Group’s relationship to the IRS?
The Tax ID Filing Group is independent of the IRS. It represents you and does so only for the tax ID number application.
I’ve heard applications for a tax ID number are sometimes rejected. Why is that?
It is happening more frequently since fall 2015. Common reasons:
- An organization with a similar name exists somewhere else in the US.
- A person's name is not an exact match with the name on record for the listed IRS Social Security number.
- The organization already has a tax ID number.
There are many other reasons for rejection, such as a disallowed abbreviation in the address or technical problems within the IRS. The Tax ID Filing Group knows the best ways to speedily solve the problems that crop up.
Might I need two tax ID numbers?
Generally not. Each establishment should have only one tax ID number, no more. When you buy a business, stop using the old tax ID number and get a new one. Consult your tax advisor if you think your organization needs two.
What if I discover I made a significant typo on my application?
The Tax ID Filing Group will help you fix that. It is important that the company name and mailing address be free of typos.
What if something changes later, like my address or the name of the responsible party?
The Tax ID Filing Group can help you update that, but it’s very simple for you to get and file IRS Form 8822-B.
Is my information confidential and secure?
Yes. We do not sell, rent, or give out your information except as required by law. Carefully thought out security measures are in place to keep your data safe. See "Security & Privacy."
The Basics of EINs (Tax IDs)
The IRS wants to keep track of your new company or organization through a single unique number it assigns. Nearly every kind of employer in the US needs one, too, though most people paying household workers can be exempted.
This unique number, the federal Employer Identification Number (EIN, also called Tax ID Number) is good for the life span of your organization.
Quoting from the Tax-ID-Group FAQ on this page, “When and why do I need a tax ID number?"
“Organizations and businesses need a tax ID when they first are formed. Most business permits, business bank accounts, sales tax accounts, state tax accounts, loans, and business credit applications require one. A sole proprietor (a business owner who is not a registered company) or a simple partnership also usually needs one, and Schedule C of Form 1040 often requires it. To pay payroll tax on employees requires a tax ID.”
You need a new tax ID number if you
-
form an LLC, corporation, or other business entity
-
form a partnership
-
buy an LLC or other business entity (Do not use the previous owners’ EIN, to avoid tax liability.)
-
have a corporation that turns into a sole proprietorship or partnership
-
have a foreign business that starts to operate in the US
-
go into bankruptcy
-
establish a plan for pension, profit-sharing, or retirement
-
become a “subsidiary” of a corporation (a “division” is okay with no separate EIN)
-
a partner takes over a partnership and it becomes a sole proprietorship
And oddly, if you’re reporting gambling winnings, you need a tax ID.
You generally don’t need a new tax ID number if you only
-
change the name of your business or relocate
-
set up a “DBA” (doing-business-as name)
-
operate multiple businesses in multiple locations within that business entity
A responsible party is necessary
Usually one person must be listed as the “principal responsible party” for the business, a person who is an owner, CEO, or executor, and so on. That person must have a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). As of May 13, 2019, only individuals with tax ID numbers may request an EIN as the responsible party on the application. The IRS no longer allows entities to be the responsible party.
By the way, a temporarily appointed person (a nominee) cannot be a responsible party, according to the IRS. If you agree to be a responsible party temporarily for an organization that is not your own, tax liability could result, so that’s inadvisable.
Using an EIN
Use the EIN on all documents you send to the IRS. Don’t use someone else’s tax ID. You wouldn’t want to be considered liable for someone else’s taxes, would you?

Choosing a Tax ID Service
Price
Many tax ID service companies hide their price. Some add hidden fees or advertise their service as “starting at” a certain price. A few require that you enter quite a few personal details before you can see a price. The Tax ID Filing Group’s price for a Tax ID (EIN) is the price you see on this page, and there are no hidden fees. You’ll pay more at nearly every other place.
Turnaround
Find the site's turnaround time and make sure it meets your schedule. Some business owners need the Tax ID within a few hours, and that’s part of their high price. If you can handle receiving your results within about one business day, we can help you at a more reasonable price.
Expertise
Look for form instructions that are clear, careful and to the point. A company that is meticulous with the design and text of its website stands a better chance of being meticulous with your Tax ID application. Misspellings are a red flag.
Reputable way of doing business
Can you easily find a straightforward identification of the company? Does it have a physical address? How long has it been in business? Does it explain terms and conditions? Many people believe it’s misleading when a service's site is designed to come across as a governmental site.
Ease of use
If the site is hard to use, that defeats the point of using a tax ID service, right? For a smooth experience, look for an online form that’s easy to read, easy to follow, plus gives helpful tips right where you need them. A one-page form is ideal.
Security and privacy
Typing in your credit card details on an insecure site creates a real risk of credit-card theft. Look for “https,” not “http,” in the URL line at the top, like above (“s” stands for secure and for “Secure Sockets Layer.”) It’s essential that the site shows you it's using a reliable credit card payment gateway whenever you’re asked to enter your credit-card details. The absence of a businesslike security policy and privacy policy is a red flag. (Our security policy and privacy policy are at the bottom of the page.)
